Snake Breeding Projects

Caramel Corn SnakeThe "Projects" section is a part of the website where we think out loud. Here we will tell you about on going breeding programmes, things we might work on for the future and possibly new additions to our little groups. We will share our successes and failures with you and maybe give you some ideas for your own corn breeding.

The Caramel Project

Butter Corn Snake

The group of animals within this project read more like a list of ingredients! The caramel morph was first developed by Rich Zuchouski of Serpenco and is thought to be a simple recessive mutation although quite often it is possible to pick out hets from a group because of their yellow tones. The caramel gene is similar to the anerythristic gene as it diminishes the red pigment but at the same time it appears to increase the yellow pigments.

When combined with the amelanistic genes, a beautiful yellow snake can be produced known as the butter corn or combined with the hypomelanistic gene, can produce amber corns.

Stripes and motley patterns have been added to achieve butter motley, amber motley and caramel stripes. Our little group also includes a pair of amels het for butter and motley and a butter motley het stripe so hopefully in the future we may produce butter stripes.

Our caramel stripe pair are thought to be het hypo too, so time will tell if this proves to be the case.
